After a disastrous first encounter, they initially bristle at their professional arrangement to work on the inn. The producer requests that the women play this up angle, which they do until their simmering chemistry threatens to undermine it. DiMercurio teases out the delightful tension created by the contrast between Astrid's polished veneer and Jordan's down-to-earth temperament as they continue with the ratings gimmick while concealing their burgeoning romance during outings with friends and renovation planning. DiMercurio's charming performance also enlivens supporting characters. This heartwarming affirmation of unexpected love and starting anew is an audio treat. J.R.T. AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine"

Jordan Everwood, a carpenter who is experiencing trauma in her own life, is also suffering an upset in her career. They are forced to work together to renovate Jordan's family inn for a TV show that they hope will help them both get back in control of their lives. Astrid has come up with a design to modernize the inn, but Jordan wants to retain the history and unique design of the place. The producers encourage them to play up the tension between them, and they both have to decide what they want and what they're willing to do to get it. The story takes a little while to pick up speed, but once it does, the characters and relationship feel balanced and fresh. VERDICT Blake's second Bright Falls novel (after Delilah Green Doesn't Care ) is a good fit for readers looking for stories involving thirtysomething characters, bisexuality, strong friendships, and character growth. Be aware that parental emotional abuse is a significant element of the plot. --Sydney AshbyCopyright 2022 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. " Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 15, 2022 A driven interior designer finds herself in new territory when she unexpectedly falls for a carpenter. After breaking things off with her perfect-on-paper fiance, Astrid Parker throws herself into her work as an interior designer. Astrid might seem uptight to her loud and lovable group of friends, but she knows she just holds herself to a high standard--one set years ago by her overbearing, critical mother. But one thing Astrid never counted on was carpenter Jordan Everwood, whom she runs into--literally--before realizing the two of them will have to work together on Astrid's latest renovation, the Everwood Inn. Astrid is tasked with redesigning the inn for an HGTV show called Innside America, and she's hoping the job will help revitalize her career. But Jordan isn't just the carpenter on the job--she's also the granddaughter of the inn's owner, and her sentimentality makes Astrid's job harder. Astrid wants to make every room sleek and modern, while Jordan wants to keep the inn quirky and dark. But their on-camera clashes lead to an off-camera attraction, and eventually Astrid begins to realize that her carefully laid plans might not be what she wants after all. In the second book in her Bright Falls series, following Delilah Green Doesn't Care (2022), Blake tenderly explores Astrid's journey to becoming more herself--which involves interrogating her career dreams and realizing that she's bisexual. Astrid and Jordan are both appealing characters, and Astrid's boisterous and endearing group of queer friends will make Bright Falls a town readers won't want to leave. A steamy, emotional, and charming romance about defining success on your own terms. COPYRIGHT(2022) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. "

Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: Starred review from January 1, 2018 After 12-year-old Ivy’s rural Georgia home is obliterated by a tornado, she heads to a shelter for the night with her parents, older sister, and twin baby brothers. There, Ivy ends up hanging out with her classmate June, a budding poet who admires Ivy’s drawing talent. The same night, Ivy’s treasured notebook goes missing—a book where she brought all her secrets to life, including the fact that Ivy thinks she likes girls. Worse, the person who has her notebook starts leaving notes in her locker, telling Ivy she should share her secret with someone she trusts. Black ( Suffer Love ) gives Ivy the deep-thinking soul of an artist, gently examining the trauma of losing her home, Ivy’s excitement about her crush on June, and her fears that people will judge her if they discover her secret. Blake dots Ivy’s world with sensitive and knowing conversation partners, young and old, with whom Ivy shares her questions and worries. This is an emotionally sensitive and elegantly written novel about loss and the first stirrings of love. Ages 8–12. Agent: Rebecca Podos, Rees Literary. In the aftermath of a tornado, Ivy and her family find themselves without a home and dependent upon the kindness of others. Already often overlooked as the middle child, Ivy feels even more invisible now that her family of six shares a small hotel room. What's worse, Ivy is developing feelings for another girl at school, but after hearing the way her older sister reacted when her best friend came out, Ivy doesn't know who to talk to. Filling a much-needed gap in middle grade literature, this story addresses not just the topic of a first crush, but also the invisibility frequently felt by middle children. The protagonist struggles with the disappearance of a beloved journal after a tornado and a lack of privacy while sharing one room with her entire family. She is too young to help care for her twin brothers but old enough that she is often forgotten about. Ivy doesn't feel comfortable discussing her blossoming romantic feelings with her family but is able to find a trusted adult in whom to confide. Young readers will find Ivy's challenges very real and will sympathize with her choices, both good and bad. Give to fans of Tim Federle's Better Nate than Ever or Barbara Dee's Star-Crossed . VERDICT Relatable and engaging. A first purchase for public and school libraries.- Jenni Frencham, Columbus Public Library, WICopyright 2018 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. The images are telling, there can be no doubt that the white girl with the coiling mane of wild strawberry-blonde hair is 12-year-old Ivy or that she's holding hands with a dark-haired white girl in every picture. When her drawings begin turning up in her school locker, Ivy's biggest fear comes true: someone knows her secret. The mystery person encourages Ivy to come out, but whom can she trust? Is she even ready? Blake's (Suffer Love, 2016) first middle-grade novel is characterized by rich, descriptive prose. The tornado scene is filled with breathtaking urgency as Ivy and her family run for safety, and the descriptions of Ivy's contradictory and confusing feelings capture the heartbreaking difficulty of a non-normative early adolescence filled with questions of identity and belonging. Most characters are assumed white, the black lesbian who owns the inn where the Aberdeens stay after the storm and who steps in as a surrogate mother while Ivy's own is occupied with insurance and a sick baby, is engaged to a brown-skinned Latina.Ivy's story is no mere niche-filler in LGBTQ middle-grade realism--it's a standard-setter. Iris Kelly is a romance novelist who doesn’t do relationships—but she does agree to an (awkward) one-night stand with eventual love interest Stevie Scott. With Iris struggling with writer’s block and Stevie hoping to become less anxious around sex, the pair decide on a mutually beneficial fake-dating scheme made less typical by the extents to which they take the ruse, including rehearsed pet names and steamy practice dates. Though there’s something a little after-school-special about the presentation of Stevie’s anxiety—“Stevie’s struggles with Generalized Anxiety Disorder were very real” comes four pages after the character is introduced—the anxiety itself is portrayed realistically, and the comfort Iris gives Stevie, as well as the balance Stevie gives to Iris, is appealingly sweet. They've each had a terrible day: Iris is feeling pressure from her family to settle down (but she doesn't think that she's cut out for a relationship), and Stevie has had an uncomfortable encounter with her ex. They each decide that a one-night stand is the perfect solution to their problems. They head home for what should be a sexy hook-up until Stevie's anxiety gets the better of her and the night ends disastrously. However, after a series of believable misunderstandings, and Iris trying out for the community play that Stevie is acting in, they decide to fake-date. Through this relationship they face down the very different barriers to dating they each have. Filled with steamy sex scenes while also tackling emotional issues, this book will delight fans of the previous books in the series and will appeal to other rom-com readers as well. This time, Iris is the star, and she is struggling while watching her friends live out their romantic fantasies. In previous titles, readers saw bisexual Iris dating men and women, but now Iris is alone and feels at a loss. In an attempt to make herself feel better, she goes out on the town in Portland one evening, ending with a disastrous one-night stand with a woman named Stefania. Iris, who is also a romance novelist, feels incredibly stuck in her writing due to her current romantic situation, so she decides to join a play in hopes of breaking through her writer's block as well as her love block. Whom she finds there is unexpected: Stefania, a.k.a. Stevie. When Stevie asks her to fake-date, Iris is immediately wary, but figures it will help her write her next book, although things won't be as simple as she expected. VERDICT Blake continues to write compelling and lovable characters with engaging and empathetic storylines. Readers will love this foray back into Bright Falls. --Tegan BeeseCopyright 2023 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. Iris Kelly is happily single, though her friends and family in Portland, Oregon, would have her believe otherwise. While she'd be perfectly fine entertaining one-night-stands at Lush, her favorite queer bar, those closest to her can't seem to stop intervening in her love life. Iris is the middle child of an Irish Catholic family, squished between picture-perfect married siblings and a mother who constantly sets her up with both men and women. After her latest relationship ended with her girlfriend's wife showing up, Iris is no longer in a happily-ever-after mood...to the detriment of her second romance novel, which has a deadline coming up. Stevie Scott is in a similar predicament, her best friend/ex-girlfriend Adri is now dating her other best friend, and they're all working together on the same gender-bent production of Much Ado About Nothing at a local theater. Stevie, who battles anxiety, fears she will never get back in the dating game--not that her friends ever let her forget it. Feigning confidence, Stevie tries her hand at Lush and meets free-wheeling Iris, though the date doesn't quite end in fireworks. But when Iris unknowingly shows up to audition for Stevie's play, they realize they can teach each other a few things about romance and sex while appeasing their nosy friends for a couple of months. As they coach each other through the ins and outs of casual dating and wooing, Iris and Stevie begin to find it difficult to keep their ruse strictly educational. The third and final installment of Blake's Bright Falls series features an eclectic and diverse, albeit overbearing, cast of friends. Iris and Stevie's attraction to each other is palpable, and Blake masterfully weaves a tale of growth where friendship, confidence, and passion ensue. A treat for fake-dating fans and happily-ever-after lovers alike. COPYRIGHT(2023) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. "

Life gets more complex when Iris and Stevie end up not only as the leads in a play directed by Stevie's ex but also playing fake girlfriends in real life. DiMercurio's familiarity with all the supporting characters pays off with well-established personalities and voices. When the writing expresses Stevie's anxiety or states how fantastic the characters' acting skills are, DiMercurio rises to the challenge. And the love scenes sound downright sultry.
