Seit wann gibt es ihn eigentlich und wieso? Hans Peter Herrmann greift diese Fragen in seinem Buch auf. Er widerspricht dem bisherigen Konsens der deutschen Historiografie, der Nationalismus sei im Vorfeld der Französischen Revolution entstanden, als politische Ideologie der sich bildenden Nationalstaaten. Herrmann hingegen sieht seinen Anfang in den Jahrzehnten um 1500 und versteht ihn als Handeln. Die damaligen politischen und kulturellen Eliten reagierten damit produktiv auf Krisenerfahrungen der Epoche: auf die Entstehung der neuzeitlichen Territorialstaaten, den Geltungsverlust der kirchlich bestimmten Kultur des Spätmittelalters und die Notwendigkeit einer neuen Einteilung der politischen und kulturellen Welt Europas. Seine Thesen entwickelt Herrmann an politischen, diplomatischen und, mit Gewicht, literarischen Texten. Er stützt sie durch methodologische Reflexionen und Überlegungen zu ihrer politischen Bedeutung heute. Und ergänzt sie durch Kapitel über die Entstehung der Begriffe Diutsche und natio.
