Das vorliegende Buch versucht, im Geiste W. R. HAMILTONS die geometrische Optik in ihrem heutigen Bestand aus einem Grundgesetz, einer Umformung des FERMATschen Prinzipes, einheitlich aufzubauen. Um zu zeigen, daß die hier angewandten Methoden auch für andere Variationsprobleme sich nützlich erweisen können, werden im ersten Teil, angeregt durch Arbeiten von C. CARATHEODORY, die Grundgesetze auch in anisotropen und inhomogenen Mitteln behandelt. Im zweiten Teil findet man eine Darstellung der Gesetze erster Ordnung, in dem u. a. die Ergebnisse A. GULLSTRANDS neu abgeleitet werden; hier wird insbesondere darauf geachtet, den oft verwischten Unterschied deutlich aufzuzeigen zwischen den Eigenschaften der optischen Abbildung in der Nähe einer Rotationsachse und den Eigenschaften einer kollinearen Abbildung mit in der Grenze gleichen Eigenschaften. Die Theorie der Strahlenbegrenzung nach ABBE und M. v. ROHR geht hier auch weiter als üblich, und es wird auf die Grenzen ihrer Gültigkeit hingewiesen. Die SEIDELschen Bildfehler werden sowohl in ihrer Abhängigkeit von der Blendenlage, als auch - wohl zum erstenmal - in ihrer Abhängigkeit von der Objektlage eingehend behandelt; dies Kapitel wird sicher auch dem reinen Praktiker etwas bieten, da hier u. a. die Grenzen der Forderungen angegeben werden, die man an optische Systeme stellen darf. Der vorletzte Teil beschäftigt sich mit den Abbildungsgesetzen bei endlicher Öffnung und endlicher Apertur, insbesondere mit der ABBEschen Sinusbedingung und ihren Erweiterungen. In diesem und dem letzten Teil, der besondere, ausgezeichnete Abbildungen des ganzen Strahlenraums behandelt, sind insbesondere Untersuchungen verarbeitet, die mein Kollege H.
