Marit Heuß entdeckt Peter Handkes »persönliches Epos« – seine Notizbücher – und damit seine in Zeichnungen, Kunstbeschreibungen und Erzählungen facettenreiche »Bildpoetik«. Das »Bild« wird für den Nobelpreisträger zur »Vokabel der Universalsprache«, zum Inbegriff seiner Poetik. Über die Lektüre der reich bebilderten und unveröffentlichten »Merkhefte« Peter Handkes betrachtet Marit Heuß dessen Erzählen seit dem Debüt »Die Hornissen« 1966 bis hin zu den Großprojekten »Langsame Heimkehr« 1979 und »Der Bildverlust« 2002 als ein Schreiben, das sich am »Bild« orientiert. In der Notizbuchsammlung des Handke-Vorlasses am Deutschen Literaturarchiv Marbach finden sich ab 1975/1976 - seither führt der Schriftsteller täglich Notizbuch - eigene Zeichnungen des Autors. Die Bildmotive reichen von Nachahmungen der »ersten Zeichnungen von Menschen« - wie das archaische Felsbild eines Büffels - bis hin zu andersartig »arkadischen« Landschaftsbildern aus dem »tiefen Österreich«. Auch Alltagsskizzen, ornamentale Figuren oder Kritzeleien fehlen nicht. Handkes »Bilderatlas« birgt zudem hunderte Beschreibungen von Kunst in Museen - Cézanne, van Gogh, Rothko, Poussin, Goya, Bosch, Vermeer, Zurbarán - sowie in Sakralbauten von Santiago de Compostela bis nach Thessaloniki. Heuß fragt nach den ästhetischen und geistigen Horizonten dieser Bilder für Handkes Erzählungen.
