Die von der Kritik hochgelobte Gesamteinspielung der beethovenschen Klaviersonaten durch die kanadische Ausnahmepianistin Angela Hewitt ist inzwischen bei Folge 8 angekommen (zuletzt Folge 7: IN-G 24/18, StO klein plus, ekz-Nr. 780.077.5). Das bewährte Konzept, Sonaten aus unterschiedlichen Schaffensperioden zu kombinieren, setzt sie auch in dieser Folge fort mit der ersten, Joseph Haydn gewidmeten Sonate F-Dur op. 2,1 aus dem Jahr 1795, der vier Jahre später entstandenen G-Dur-Sonate op. 14,2 und der nur aus zwei Sätzen bestehenden Sonate F-Dur op. 54. Bekanntestes Werk dieser Einspielung ist die berühmte "Waldstein-Sonate" C-Dur op. 53 aus dem Jahr 1804. Beethovens Klaviersonaten gehören zum klassischen Kernrepertoire der Pianisten, der Pianist, Dirigent und Liszt-Schwiegersohn Hans von Bülow hat sie als das "Neue Testament" der Pianisten bezeichnet (das "Alte Testament" war für ihn Bachs Wohltemperiertes Klavier).
