Ostpreußen im Januar 1945: Auf der Flucht vor der Sowjetarmee verschlägt es über 10.000 Menschen nach Gotenhafen in der Danziger Bucht, wo der umgebaute Vergnügungsdampfer "Wilhelm Gustloff" vor Anker liegt. Das für 1.500 Passagiere konzipierte Schiff ist die letzte Chance für die Menschen, den halbwegs sicheren Hafen von Kiel zu erreichen. Am 30. Januar, dem Jahrestag von Hitlers Machtergreifung, wird das überladene Schiff auf der Ostsee von einem sowjetischen U-Boot torpediert und sinkt innerhalb von 60 Minuten. 9.000 Menschen finden den Tod. Ein eindringlicher, glaubwürdiger (Fernseh-)Anti-Kriegsfilm, der die historischen Fakten zwar mit fiktionalen Geschichten ausschmückt, aber auf der Basis von Zeitzeugenaussagen weitgehend authentisch bleibt.
