„Herdfeuer“ gilt als der wichtigste kroatische Roman aus der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der deutsche Slawist Reinhold Trautmann stellte ihn 1947 in die Reihe der „großen slawischen Romane“, für den österreichischen Literaturkritiker Josef Laßl stand er 1966 gar auf einer Höhe mit dem jugoslawischen Literaturnobelpreisträger Ivo Andrić. Während des Ersten Weltkrieges entfaltet sich in einem kleinen Dorf in der Lika im heutigen Kroatien eine mörderische Tragödie. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die klassische südslawische Großfamilie („Zadruga“) und das mystische Herdfeuer, das nie verlöschen darf. Aus eigenem Erleben schildert der Autor das europäische Volksleben vor Elektrifizierung und Mechanisierung der ländlichen Regionen. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Slobodan Novak, der an verschiedenen Universitäten in Zagreb, Rom und den USA slawische Literatur gelehrt und mehr als 70 Bücher veröffentlicht hat, steuert ein kundiges Vorwort über Roman und Autor zum Buch bei.
