Content: 〈i〉Inside the Invisible〈/i〉 provides the first examination of the work of Turner Prize-winning Black British artist and curator Professor Lubaina Himid CBE. This comprehensive volume breaks new ground by theorizing her development of an alternative visual and textual language within which to do justice to the hidden histories and untold stories of Black women, children, and men bought and sold into transatlantic slavery. For Himid, the act of forgetting within official sites of memory is indivisible from the art of remembering within an African diasporic art historical tradition. She interrogates the widespread distortion and even wholesale erasure of Black bodies and souls subjected to dehumanizing stereotypes and grotesque caricatures within western imaginaries and dominant iconographic traditions over the centuries. Creating bodies of work in which she comes to grips with the physical and psychological realities of iconic and anonymous African diasporic individuals as living breathing human beings rather than as objectified types, she bears witness not only to tragedy but to triumph. A self-appointed researcher, historian, and storyteller as well as an artist, she succeeds in seeing "inside the invisible" regarding untold narratives of Black agency and artistry by mining national archives, listening to oral stories, acknowledging art-making traditions, and revisiting autobiographical testimonies.

Content: This book is the latest project within the wider 'Practising Place' programme, which explores our relationship with place through a collection of co-authored texts, visual essays, creative projects and conversations between artists and academics. Featuring new and existing artworks and covering a range of themes, including rural mythologies, urban noise, boundaries and seaside nostalgia, this highly visual book demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary discourse and presents an approach to the study of place as a creative and critical practice. Since 2013, the programme has developed relationships between artists and academics from fields such as human geography, landscape archaeology, history and sociology, with a view to generating new understandings of places through the sharing of ideas and approaches. These conversations have been made public through commissioned essays and a series of events across the north and Midlands in venues such as the Bluecoat (Liverpool), Tyneside Cinema (Newcastle), and Nottingham Contemporary. Building on these activities, the publication features creative explorations of places across the north of England including a Cumbrian Center Parcs resort, Stanlow Oil Refinery, working-men's clubs, Manchester Central Library, and the edgelands of Preston and Sheffield, as well as more general themes such as urban planning and digital space. Contributions on topics such as 'How to paint on things', 'How to write in code', 'How to do magic', 'How to be funny', 'How to make a life plan using poetry' address the key artistic interests of Himid's career, particularly her exploration of the history of painting, political satire, poetry and spoken word, architecture and spaces for feeling safe, and for creativity, textiles and the non-verbal messages of pattern. The artist will contribute new texts of her own and contributors from a variety of backgrounds and expertise will write from perspectives that set Himid's work and artistic interests into wider contexts.
