Eine junge Frau wird buchstäblich abgeschlachtet, ihre 4-jährige Tochter neben der Leiche aufgefunden. Detective Tony Mendez und FBI-Mann Vince Leone untersuchen den Mord, während die Lehrerin Anne (im Vorgänger ledig, jetzt Vinces Frau) sich um das traumatisierte Kind kümmert. Im Lauf ihrer intensiven Bemühungen werden viele Geheimnisse aufgedeckt, es gibt immer mehr Verdächtige, weitere Verbrechen geschehen, und am Ende gibt es gleich mehrere Schuldige. Tami Hoag beweist auch hier wieder, dass sie eher "hart" als "zart" kann (ihre Liebesromane sind qualitativ mäßig), die ebenso fähigen wie sympathischen Ermittler - an deren privaten Problemen Hoag die Leser/-innen auch teilhaben lässt - decken unbeirrt Schicht um Schicht in diesem kniffligen Fall auf, bis zur überraschenden Auflösung. Trotz vereinzelter Längen ein actionreicher und spannender Thriller, wie der Vorgänger breit empfohlen.
