Deshalb wurde das Hauptgewicht auf Probleme gelegt, welche lösbar sind, und weniger auf solche, deren Lösung noch nicht gelungen ist. Selbstverständlich haben die Verfasser nicht gezögert, soweit als möglich auch die Richtungen anzudeuten, in denen künftig die Forschung nutzbringend vorwärtsgetrieben werden könnte. Das vorliegende Buch basiert auf einer Übersicht über die Theorie, welche einer der Autoren (P. G. H. ) für das Office of Naval Research verfaßt hatte, als er als Mitglied einer Forschergruppe (Research Associate) an der Brown University tätig war. Während das Original dieser Übersicht in erster Linie als Einführung in die Plastizitätstheorie für jene Leser gedacht war, die auf diesem Gebiet Forschungsarbeit zu leisten beabsichtigen, trachteten die beiden Autoren, daraus ein Lehrbuch herzustellen, das sowohl von Studierenden der Technik oder der angewandten Mathematik in höheren Semestern, als auch von bereits Graduierten benutzt werden kann. Um den Umfang des Buches nicht allzusehr anwachsen zu lassen, waren die Autoren oft gezwungen, an Vollständigkeit der Darstellung zu sparen, gegenüber einer mehr ins einzelne gehenden Behandlung der Grundlagen. Indessen wurde, um auch dem Forscher gerecht zu werden, versucht, dieses Opfer an Vollständigkeit durch zahlreiche Literaturangaben nach Möglichkeit wettzumachen. Darüber hinaus wurden viele spezielle Anwendungen, die im Text keinen Platz fanden, dem Leser in Form von Aufgaben gestellt, was insbesondere dann von Wert sein dürfte, wenn das Buch als Unterlage zu einer Vorlesung benutzt wird
