Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) wird auf dem schmutzigen Boden eines Fischmarkts im Paris des 18. Jahrhunderts geboren. Seine Mutter wollte das Kind einfach liegen lassen, doch Passanten bemerken den Vorfall und das Neugeborene wird vorerst gerettet. Grenouille wächst im Waisenhaus auf, wobei sein außerordentlich ausgeprägter Geruchsinn immer mehr zum Vorschein kommt. Später wird er an den finsteren Gerber Grimal verkauft, der Kinder und Jugendliche als Arbeitskräfte benützt um sein Geschäft zu betreiben. Eines Tages liefert Grenouille gegerbte Felle an den Parfumhersteller Guiseppe Baldini (Dustin Hoffman), dessen Geschäft auch schon bessere Zeiten erlebt hat. Als Grenouille den Duft eines überaus populären Parfums der Konkurrenz vor den verduzten Augen von Baldini herstellt, beschließt er ihn bei sich einzustellen. Grenouilles unglaublich präziser Geruchsinn läßt eine Vielzahl neuer Duftkreationen entstehen, welche Baldinis Geschäft wieder in ungeahnte Höhen bringen. Im Gegenzug erklärt er sich dazu bereit dem jungen Assistenten die Geheimnisse der Duftgewinnung durch Destillation nahezubringen. Baldini ahnt nicht, dass sein gelehriger Schüler ganz andere Intentionen hegt...
