In den letzten Jahren fand eine verstärkte Diskussion statt, die einen Zusammenhang zwischen gesteigerter digitaler Mediennutzung einerseits und dem Entstehen psychischer Krankheiten (wie Erschöpfungsdepression oder Burnout) andererseits behauptet. In der (populär)wissenschaftlichen Diskussion kam es dabei zu einer teils plakativen Zuspitzung von Verdichtungswirkungen. Die vorliegende Arbeit nimmt hier eine differenzierte und analytische Haltung ein und greift auf die Theorie der Conservation of Resource von Stevan E. Hobfoll zurück. Danach handeln Menschen mit Medien, weil sie ihre Ressourcen erhalten und ausweiten wollen. Ressourcen sind hierbei alles, was Menschen wichtig ist und was sie wertschätzen (Gesundheit, Familie, soziale Teilhabe, Wohlstand etc.). Die Autorin führte eine repräsentative Befragung unter Smartphone-Nutzern sowie qualitative Interviews mit ausgewählten Teilnehmern durch. Sie kommt zu dem Schluss, dass negativ empfundenes Stresserleben nicht auf eine Vielzahl von Medienhandlungen zurückzuführen ist, sondern darauf, dass mehrere Handlungen parallel stattfinden, gerade weil sie (alle gleichsam) mit Ressourcengewinnen verbunden werden. Ein so entstehender Ressourcenkonflikt kann sich unter Umständen und in langfristiger Hinsicht verstetigen und zu Erkrankungen führen. Quelle: Verlag.
