Paul findet seine Mutter Hermine tot in ihrer Küche, in einem dünnen Kleid, die dünnen Beine in Gummistiefeln neben einem Haufen Stroh. Rückblickend erzählt die Autorin in ihrem Debüt die Geschichte einer jungen Frau, die lebenslustig und frei von Konventionen in der Zeit vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg aufwächst und schließlich Karl trifft. Die beiden sind sehr verliebt ineinander, heiraten, bekommen 2 Söhne. Dann muss Karl an die russische Front und Hermine zerbricht. Sie hofft Jahre und Jahrzehnte darauf, dass Karl wieder nach Hause kommt. Sie vernachlässigt alles um sich herum. Um nichts in der Welt gönnt sie sich oder ihrer Umwelt auch nur einen einzigen schönen Moment. Der Roman kommt kurz und kompakt daher und ist doch prall mit Leben gefüllt. Hofmann schafft es, Situationen ohne Umwege zu beschreiben und dabei genau den Kern zu treffen. Der Blick der Autorin ist ganz nah am Geschehen, fokussiert, und hat im nächsten Moment wieder eine Distanz, sodass das Schreckliche der Situation für den Leser erträglich bleibt. Eine Autorin, von der man hoffentlich noch hören wird. Für alle Bibliotheken!
