Galina Ivanovna Ustvolskajas Musik wurde im Westen erst gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts bekannt, obwohl sie Schülerin des berühmtesten sowjetischen Komponisten Dmitri Shostakovitch war. Extrem zurückgezogen verbrachte sie fast ihr ganzes Leben in Sankt Petersburg. Auch wenn sie aus materiellen Gründen anfänglich Kantaten oder Suiten verfasste, die den kulturpolitischen Ideologien des Staates entsprachen, so fand sie doch sehr früh - gewissermaßen auf einer zweiten Schiene - zu einem äußerst eigenständigen, unverwechselbaren Kompositionsstil. Ihre zunehmend religiös, aber auf keine Konfession hin ausgerichteten »eigentlichen« Werke - nur 25 an der Zahl - zeichnen sich durch einen radikalen Reduktionismus aus und sind gespickt mit extremen Ausdrucksmitteln. Dieses Buch arbeitet sowohl das eigenwillige künstlerische Profil der Komponistin als auch ihre Verankerung im kulturpolitischen Kontext heraus.
