Series Statement: Routledge research in polar law
Content: "This book explores the growing interests of China in the Arctic and examines the nature of its interests and motivations in maintaining its involvement and presence in the region. The new geopolitical landscape of the Arctic today is a significant departure from the great power politics that existed in the region during the Cold War era. Apart from traditional Arctic states, more and more international organizations and non-Arctic states are showing an increased interest in this region, not least China. Many have attempted to interpret China's intention in moving to the high north and this book aims to add to the existing literature from three approaches: China's participation in the international institutions, China's relationships with the Arctic stakeholders, and China's sectoral engagement in the Arctic. In taking a three-dimensional approach to the analysis, the author builds a comprehensive picture of China's interests and activities in the Arctic, not only from the perspective of China, but also from the viewpoint of other Arctic States (Russia, Canada, the U.S., Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland). One of the first books in English to cover the subject since the release of China's Arctic Policy White Paper in January 2018, this analysis will be of interest to academics, students of Arctic studies, maritime law and international law, as well as policy-makers in Arctic and non-Arctic states"--

    Series Statement: Politics in Asia
Content: "This book explores the U.S.-China maritime relationship, examining the development and implementation of the maritime strategies of both the United States and China. Delving into the U.S.-China maritime relationship within the global context the book investigates six key maritime regions: the South China Sea, the Northeast Asia waters (the East China Sea, the Yellow Sea), the Indian Ocean, the South Pacific Ocean, as well as the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Its observations form a comprehensive exploration of these regions and their significance in shaping the dynamics between the two nations and this analysis reveals that an expanded view is necessary to discover and clearly display the role that these maritime regions currently-and could potentially-play in overarching U.S.-China relations. Examining both the ongoing conflicts and opportunities for cooperation in the global maritime domain between the U.S. and China, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of international relations, Chinese and U.S. politics, strategic studies, and maritime studies"--

Content: "The adoption of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1982 has led to a period of relative stability in the law of the sea. The Convention offers a legal framework for the sustainable development of the oceans and its natural resources. However, especially in recent times there have been calls to amend the Convention due to some ambiguous provisions which are unable to address many contemporary maritime issues. This book project evaluates the applicability and effectiveness of UNCLOS as a settlement mechanism for addressing ocean disputes. Focus is placed on the South China Sea (SCS) dispute, one of the most complex and challenging ocean-related conflicts in the world. The book examines how the emphasis on sovereignty, contention on energy, significance of the geographic location, threat to maritime security, overlapping maritime claims caused by the new established maritime regimes authorized by UNCLOS are all sources of the SCS dispute. The book considers the internal coherence of the Law of the Sea Convention regime and its dispute settlement procedures. It looks at the participation in the UNCLOS negotiation, maritime legislation, and dispute settlement practice of relevant States party to the dispute. The book goes on to explore the relationship between UNCLOS and other regimes and institutions in general in the SCS, particularly in regard to maritime security, marine environment protection, oil and gas joint development and political interaction. Nong Hong suggests practical mechanisms to solve the dispute and offers conclusions on the effectiveness of UNCLOS for settling disputes"--
