Based on the composer's memoirs, Tony Palmer's controversial feature film plays on the drama of the relationship between Shostakovich and Stalin. While politicians, generals, peasants, poets and church leaders were being purged by Stalin - in all, some 31 million of them - Shostakovich somehow survived. How? Why? At what cost, personal as well as public? Shostakovich fought to maintain musical integrity but also to keep a fragile grasp on his life as his friends and colleagues disappeared around him. It is an amazing tale. It is also true. From the memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975), edited by Solomon Volkov.
