Der vorliegende Band 44 behandelt das Gebiet der nördlichen Zillertaler Alpen (Westlicher Tuxer Kamm und Brandberger Kolm) sowie der angrenzenden südlichen Tuxer Alpen und schließt nahtlos an seinen Vorgängerband 43 an. Er widmet sich – tektonisch gesehen – den über den kristallinen Einheiten des Tauernfensters gelegenen Einheiten und führt den geowissenschaftlich interessierten Wanderer und Bergsteiger buchstäblich einige Stockwerke höher. Nicht, was die Gipfelhöhen der Berge angeht, sondern die Tektonostratigraphie der zwiebelschalenartigen Umhüllung des Tauernfensters. Von den überwiegend kristallinen Einheiten des Venediger-Deckensystems als die am tiefsten liegenden Einheiten der Ostalpen geht es über das helvetische Modereck- und das auflagernde, penninische Glockner-Deckensystem, die gemischt kristallin-metasedimentäre „Zone von Gerlos“ hinauf ins uralte Oberostalpin und letztendlich den nochmals darüber liegenden unterostalpinen kalkigen Deckenklippen. Letztere sind vor allem in den südlichen Tuxer Alpen hervorragend aufgeschlossen. Erkundet werden – wie im Vorgängerband natürlich ebenfalls „per pedes“ – in insgesamt sieben Exkursionen einer der letzten Schluchtwälder der Alpen, in jeweils zweitägiger Runde der markante Brandberger Kolm am Westende des Gerlos- und Reichenspitzkammes sowie die größte Hochgebirgshöhle Österreichs und mit dem Kleinen Kaserer immerhin ein waschechter Dreitausender mit überragenden geologischen Ein- und naturgegebenen Ausblicken. Weitere Exkursionen führen in die geologisch hochkomplexe Welt des unterostalpinen Tarntaler Mesozoikums zwischen Geier, Lizumer Reckner und Hippoldspitze, wo sich Ozeanbodenreste neben jahrhundertmillionenalten, lagunär-sedimentären Ablagerungen und seltsamen metamorphen (Mega)Brekzien gleichermaßen finden. Den Abschluss bilden Ausflüge ins Oberostalpin rund um den Rastkogel mit seiner eiszeitlich anmutenden Grastundra-Landschaft, in die sich nur wenige Wanderer verirren.
