Hosenfeld war überzeugter Nationalsozialist, bis ihn der Terror der Nazis zunehmend zweifeln liess. Unter den vielen Polen jüdischer und nichtjüdischer Herkunft, denen er als Leiter der Wehrmacht-Sportschule in Warschau das Leben rettete, war auch der Pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman. Dessen Leidensgeschichte unter den Nazis, von Polanski in "Der Pianist" verfilmt, erzählt Vinke kontrapunktisch mit. Die sehr gut zu lesende, mit Schwarz-Weiss-Abbildungen aufgelockerte Biografie, die von der Kindheit in Hessen bis zum Tod 1952 in sowjetischer Gefangenschaft einfühlsam das Leben eines innerlich zerrissenen, tief empathischen Menschen nachzeichnet, basiert auf Briefen und den umfassenden Warschauer Tagebuchaufzeichnungen Hosenfelds.
