Die vergleichende Analyse zeigt, daß die Demokratisierungstendenzen in Ägypten, Jordanien, Algerien und Jemen seit Mitte/Ende der 1980er Jahre bis zum Ausbruch der Golfkrise 1990 zwar einerseits auf länderspezifische historische Prozesse zurückzuführen sind, es darüber hinaus aber auch gemeinsame Katalysatoren gegeben hat: krisenhafte Wirtschaftsentwicklungen, Zwang zu wirtschaftlicher Liberalisierung und struktureller Anpassung, Unzufriedenheit der gebildeten Eliten mit den politischen Institutionen, Demonstrationseffekt der Entwicklungen in Osteuropa. Auch wenn der Golfkrieg den Demokratisierungsprozeß in den untersuchten Ländern zunächst zurückgeworfen hat, erwartet der Autor langfristig eine Fortführung des Trends zu Liberalisierung und erweiterter Partizipation.
