Zwei Männer, Vater und Sohn, haben, ohne es zu wissen, im Abstand von fast 30 Jahren dieselbe Frau, Elenir, geliebt und mit ihr einen Sohn gehabt. Der Sohn des Vaters Xavier starb kurz nach der Geburt, er verliess Elenir, heiratete seine Studienfreundin Isabel und hatte mit ihr 4 Kinder. Einer ihrer Söhne, Teo, lernte als junger Mann die inzwischen viel ältere Elenir kennen. Sie starb bei der Geburt ihres gemeinsamen Kindes Benjamin. Nun ist dieser erwachsen, wird bald selber Vater und möchte mehr über seine Familie erfahren. Seine im Sterben liegende Grossmutter Isabel, Teos Freund Raul und Haroldo, ein Familienfreund, erzählen im Wechsel, dabei wird nicht nur das bis dahin gut gehütete Geheimnis um Elenir enthüllt, gleichzeitig entfaltet sich eine Geschichte um Schuld, Verrat, Krankheit und Liebe vor dem Hintergrund der gesellschaftlichen und politischen Veränderungen der letzten Jahrzehnte. Was dem Leser genauso wie Benjamin zunächst verwirrend erscheint, setzt sich langsam, aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln erzählt, wie ein Puzzle zusammen. Breite Empfehlung
