Content:
An exploration of Richard Lippold's great sculpture, THE SUN, at the Metropolitan Museum. Hurwitz contributes his own experiences of the sun and the play of light - in reality and in art - and explores the way experience of reality expresses itself as abstraction in art. An almost perfect film. (Anthology Film Archive)
Content:
Examines American sculptor Richard Lippold's (b.1915) use of natural subjects as inspiration for his art. Presents Lippold, a musician as well as a sculptor, in his studio playing the organ. Includes some of his works, focusing on The Sun, a 22-carat gold-filled wire sculpture commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Uses shots of the sun and sunlight shining on objects, animals, people, birds, and the sea, to simulate the artist's experience in deriving inspiration for his sculpture. Organ music played by Lippold, E. Power Biggs, and Daniel Pinkham. (Pennsylvania State University Audio Visual Services)
