Sein ausschweifendes Leben und die Installation des Sonnengottes an der Spitze des Pantheons erzürnten Senat und Volk von Rom und führten schliesslich zur Ermordung durch die Prätorianergarde. Wichtiger jedoch als die kurze Herrschaft sind die Nachwirkungen in Kunst und Literatur, welche die Jahrhunderte nach "Elagabal" beherrschten. Sein starkes Eintreten für eine religiöse Überzeugung und die Unterordnung aller weltlichen Dinge erinnern schon fast an moderne Fundamentalisten. Dies herauszuarbeiten gelingt Icks, Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter der Universität Düsseldorf. Ausführlich beschreibt er wie die Nachwelt den Priesterkaiser interpretiert hat: von den Werken des Cassius Dio bis hin zu modernen Theaterstücken und Opern, die noch im 21.
