Dass die religiösen und kulturellen Prägungen das Verstehen und Erleben einer Krankheit und somit die Entscheidungen des Patienten unmittelbar beeinflussen, ist ein bekanntes Phänomen. In Arztpraxen und Krankenhäusern begegnet man täglich Verständigungsschwierigkeiten und Interessenkonflikten zwischen Ärzten, Pflegepersonal und muslimischen Patienten, die auf unterschiedlichen religiös kulturellen Wertvorstellungen gründen. Das Verstehen dieser Konfliktfelder und die Gestaltung einer angemessenen Umgangsformmit diesen Konflikten erfordert Kenntnisse über Grundlagen des muslimischen Krankheitsverständnisses und dessen Einflussformen in der medizinischen Praxis. In diesem Beitrag werden Krankheitsbegriffe der islamischen Hauptquellen und das muslimische Krankheitsverständnis dargestellt, sowie die aus der islamischen Glaubenspraxis entstandenen Konfliktfelder im medizinischen Alltag diskutiert. Ein Versuch zu einer medizinethischen Standortbestimmung und einige handlungsleitende Grundsätze schließensich an.
