Im ersten Teil des Buches werden methodologische Probleme aus historischer und literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive erörtert, im zweiten Teil steht das Verhältnis von Institution und individuellem Bildungsgang im Zentrum. Die Beiträge im dritten Teil handeln von Bildungsgängen solcher Männer und Frauen, auf deren individuelle Erziehung aufgrund ihrer Zugehörigkeit zum Adel besonders große Sorgfalt verwendet wurde.
