Kunst sollte im Staatssozialismus der DDR den Herrschaftsanspruch durch ästhetische Präsentation der beabsichtigten gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit vergegenwärtigen. Soziale Kollektivbildungen und der Austausch von Handlungsformen zwischen Künstler- und Arbeiterschaft dienten diesem Zweck. Die Mehrheit der Künstler hingegen wollte mit Mitteln der Kunst zu einer neuen Gemeinschaft gelangen und verstand das Wirken in Zusammenschlüssen als Multiplikator ihrer künstlerischen Auffassungen. Diese kunstsoziologische Untersuchung basiert auf Archivdokumenten und zeigt die gegenkulturellen Potenziale der Verbindung zwischen Leben und Kunst auf.
