Jean-François Jarrige, membre de l'Institut de France (Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres) a marqué de son empreinte l'archéologie du sous-continent indien, notamment à travers ses fouilles de Mehrgarh et de Nausharo au Baluchistan pakistanais, faisant reculer de plusieurs millénaires le passé de l'Asie du Sud. Mais il a aussi participé à l'histoire des musées français puisqu'il a dirigé pendant vingt-deux ans le musée national des arts asiatiques Guimet, à Paris, dont il a mené la complète rénovation. Pour lui rendre hommage, 46 chercheurs (archéologues, conservateurs, universitaires, etc.) se sont associés pour lui dédicacer vingt-quatre articles dont la diversité témoigne des intérêts variés de Jean-François Jarrige et de la richesse des études orientalistes actuelles
