Mit seinem Oktett F-Dur D 803 wollte Franz Schubert sich "den Weg zur großen Sinfonie bahnen". Mit fast einer Stunde Dauer ist es sein längstes Kammermusikwerk. Die Besetzung mit Klarinette, Horn, Fagott, Kontrabass und Streichquartett hat ihr Vorbild in Beethovens Septett op. 20. Mit seinen insgesamt sechs Sätzen, der klanglich-harmonischen Bandbreite in der Kombination der Instrumente, dem Gewicht der Ecksätze und dem ausgedehnten Variationensatz (über ein Thema aus einem eigenen Werk) sprengt das Werk die Grenzen der Kammermusik. - Mit dem Quatuor Modigliani, der Klarinettistin Sabine Meyer und weiteren namhaften Interpreten erfährt dieses Schlüsselwerk im Schaffen Schuberts und in der Kammermusik des 19. TON-E Schon beim Komponieren seines Oktetts D 803 wusste Schubert, dass das Werk die Grenzen der Kammermusik sprengen würde. In einem Brief vom März 1824 an den Maler-Freund Leopold Kupelwieser sprach er von mehreren Streichquartetten und diesem Oktett, um sich damit den Weg zur großen Sinfonie zu bahnen. Es handelt sich demnach um eine Art sinfonischer Studie, was man an vielen Zügen hören kann. Das Oktett ist Schuberts längstes Kammermusikwerk. Dies erklärt sich aus der Form des Wiener Divertimentos, die er hier unter sinfonischen Vorzeichen noch einmal aufleben ließ. Dabei folgte er nicht nur dem Vorbild von Beethovens Septett, sondern auch dem Mozarts, der in einigen besonders anspruchsvollen Werken diese Form gleichsam klassisch nobilitiert hatte. Bemerkenswert an seiner Deutung der Form ist nicht nur das Gewicht der Ecksätze, neuartig ist auch die klanglich-harmonische Bandbreite der Variationen über ein Thema aus seiner frühen Oper "Die Freunde von Salamanca", dessen Divertimento-Ton im Lauf der insgesamt sieben ausgedehnten Variationen ins Romantisch-Sehnsüchtige überhöht wird.
