Als der Zweite Weltkrieg ausbricht, flieht die zehnjährige Janina Dawidowicz (Dana Vávrová) mit ihren Eltern Marek (Peter Bongartz) und Celia (Aviva Joel) aus ihrer kleinen polnischen Heimatstadt zunächst nach Warschau. Nach dem Einmarsch der Deutschen schlagen sie sich wieder nach Hause durch, doch da sie polnische Juden sind, wurde ihr ganzer Besitz beschlagnahmt. Ihre einzige Überlebenschance sehen sie, wie viele andere Juden, im Warschauer Ghetto. Die Eltern versuchen ihr inmitten des Albtraums ein bisschen Kindheit zu ermöglichen und organisieren sogar verbotenen Schulunterricht. Marek wird gezwungen, als Ghettopolizist zu arbeiten, was eine fürchterliche Schande für die Familie ist, sie aber eine Zeit lang davor bewahrt, in die Vernichtungslager deportiert zu werden wie Janinas Großeltern (Emil Stöhr und Helma Seitz). Der Deutsche Erich Grabowski (Reinhard von Bauer) bringt Janina heimlich unter. Sie wird in mehreren Klosterschulen versteckt und katholisch erzogen. Nach dem Krieg erfährt sie, dass ihre Eltern in Majdanek umkamen. Nach einer ersten Staffel mit acht einstündigen Folgen liefen Ende 1986 zwei neue, spielfilmlange Folgen, die auf dem dritten Teil der Autobiografie beruhten. Die Musik schrieb Eugen Thomass.
