Inhalt: "A biography of senior Egyptian official Ahmed Hussein, Amy J. Johnson's book provides the untold story of the architect behind Egypt's inspired and highly successful social reform policies." "Johnson provides an in-depth look at how western ideas of social science entered into and became a part of Egyptian reform projects. The cornerstone of the German-educated Hussein was his Rural Social Centers project initiative, which integrated social services through complete community participation. His programs flourished and were used as models for rural development projects worldwide. After the 1952 revolution, however, Hussein's influence waned, and he refused to participate in Abd al-Nasir's development schemes. He compromised by serving as the new government's Ambassador to the U.S. But Gamal al-Nasir's eventual obliteration of Hussein's reform projects led to Hussein's resignation. Although he never again became involved in public life, Hussein created a school of thought in Egypt that endures today. Johnson chronicles current efforts afoot by several organizations to revive Hussein's methods and reform agenda."--BOOK JACKET.

Inhalt: This title presents new and often dismissed aspects of the constitutional monarchy era in Egyptian history. It demonstrates that many of the domestic and regional sociopolitical and cultural changes credited to the 1952 revolutionaries actually began in the decades before the July coup.
