Series Statement: The IMA Volumes in Mathematics and its Applications, 122
Content: Systems with sub-processes evolving on many different time scales are ubiquitous in applications: chemical reactions, electro-optical and neuro-biological systems, to name just a few. This volume contains papers that expose the state of the art in mathematical techniques for analyzing such systems. Recently developed geometric ideas are highlighted in this work that includes a theory of relaxation-oscillation phenomena in higher dimensional phase spaces. Subtle exponentially small effects result from singular perturbations implicit in certain multiple time scale systems. Their role in the slow motion of fronts, bifurcations, and jumping between invariant tori are all explored here. Neurobiology has played a particularly stimulating role in the development of these techniques and one paper is directed specifically at applying geometric singular perturbation theory to reveal the synchrony in networks of neural oscillators.
Note: Foreword -- Preface -- Homoclinic orbits to invariant tori in Hamiltonian systems -- Geometric singular perturbation theory beyond normal hyperbolicity -- A primer on the exchange lemma for fast-slow systems -- Geometric analysis of the singularly perturbed planar fold -- Multiple time scales and canards in a chemical oscillator -- A geometric method for periodic orbits in singularly-perturbed systems -- The phenomenon of delayed bifurcation and its analyses -- Synchrony in networks of neuronal oscillators -- Metastable dynamics and exponential asymptotics in multi-dimensional domains -- List of workshop participants.

Content: This volume contains the lecture notes written by the four principal speakers at the C.I.M.E. session on Dynamical Systems held at Montecatini, Italy in June 1994. The goal of the session was to illustrate how methods of dynamical systems can be applied to the study of ordinary and partial differential equations. Topics in random differential equations, singular perturbations, the Conley index theory, and non-linear PDEs were discussed. Readers interested in asymptotic behavior of solutions of ODEs and PDEs and familiar with basic notions of dynamical systems will wish to consult this text.
Note: Random dynamical systems -- Geometric singular perturbation theory -- Conley index theory -- Dynamics of partial differential equations on thin domains.

Content: DYNAMICS REPORTED reports on recent developments in dynamical systems. Dynamical systems of course originated from ordinary differential equations. Today, dynamical systems cover a much larger area, including dynamical processes described by functional and integral equations, by partial and stochastic differential equations, etc. Dynamical systems have involved remarkably in recent years. A wealth of new phenomena, new ideas and new techniques are proving to be of considerable interest to scientists in rather different fields. It is not surprising that thousands of publications on the theory itself and on its various applications are appearing DYNAMICS REPORTED presents carefully written articles on major subjects in dynamical systems and their applications, addressed not only to specialists but also to a broader range of readers including graduate students. Topics are advanced, while detailed exposition of ideas, restriction to typical results - rather than the most general one- and, last but not least, lucid proofs help to gain the utmost degree of clarity. It is hoped, that DYNAMICS REPORTED will be useful for those entering the field and will stimulate an exchange of ideas among those working in dynamical systems Summer 1991 Christopher K. R.
