    Edition: 1st ed.
    ISBN: 90-485-3522-0
Series Statement: Asian borderlands ; 7.
Content: The world is experiencing one of the largest movements of people in history with 65 million people displaced by conflict in 2015, the majority of which were from Asia. This book brings a deep engagement with individuals whose lives are shaped by encounters with borders by telling the stories of a poor Bangladeshi women who regularly crosses the India border to visit family, of Muslims from India living in Gulf countries for work, and the harrowing journey of a young Afghan man as he sets off on foot to Germany. The international and interdisciplinary work in this book contributes to this moment by analyzing how borders are experienced by migrants and borderlanders in South Asia, how mobility and diaspora are engaged in literature and media, and how the lives of migrants are transformed during their journey to new homes in South Asia, the Middle East, North America, and Europe.

Edition: This paperback edition first published by Verso 2017
    ISBN: 9781784784744
Content: Forty thousand people died trying to cross international borders in the past decade, with the high-profile deaths along the shores of Europe only accounting for half of the grisly total.
Content: Reece Jones argues that these deaths are not exceptional, but rather the result of state attempts to contain populations and control access to resources and opportunities. “We may live in an era of globalization,” he writes, “but much of the world is increasingly focused on limiting the free movement of people.”
Content: In this volume, Jones crosses the migrant trails of the world, documenting the billions of dollars spent on border security projects and their dire consequences for countless millions. While the poor are restricted by the lottery of birth to slum dwellings in the aftershocks of decolonization, the wealthy travel without constraint, exploiting pools of cheap labor and lax environmental regulations. With the growth of borders and resource enclosures, the deaths of migrants in search of a better life are intimately connected to climate change, environmental degradation, and the growth of global wealth inequality.

Content: Two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, why are the notable democracies of the US, India, and Israel building massive walls and fences on their borders? Despite predictions of a borderless world through globalization, these three countries alone have built security barriers totaling an astonishing 5,700 km. Border Walls analyzes how these controversial walls were justified, their impact on those living behind them, and the long-term effects of the hardening of political boundaries

Series Statement: Geographies of justice and social transformation 41
Content: "Today we live in a world of walls and closed borders, but what should the world look like tomorrow? Open Borders counters the knee-jerk reaction to restrict migration by arguing that there is not a moral, legal, philosophical, or economic case for limiting the movement of human beings at borders. The book brings together influential theorists for open borders with activists working to make safe passage a reality on the ground to put forward a clear, concise, and convincing case for a world of open borders"...
