Quelles stratégies critiques et collectives pour un discours essayiste renouvelé, au miroir de ses supports de production et de diffusion ? Des spécialistes de l’essai et d’autres formes de non-fiction, des médias et de l’image, de l’art contemporain, des études de genre, ont proposé des contributions. Mais si la tension entre théorie et création les irrigue, elle se manifeste aussi au cœur de l’ouvrage, qui propose la restitution d’échanges animés entre deux bédéastes, un éditeur et deux universitaires, autour de la notion d’essai dessiné. L’ensemble est également rythmé « au fil du crayon » par le point de vue en images de l’auteur de bandes dessinées Fabrice Erre, dessinateur embarqué du colloque final. Le volume L’Essai médiatique, issu d’un programme de recherche de trois ans développé à l’Université de Limoges et à l’Université Gustave-Eiffel, poursuit deux objectifs. D’abord, faire le point sur l’histoire et les théories d’un genre difficile à classer, l’essai littéraire, qui a pu être qualifié de « non-genre ». Ensuite, observer les mutations de l’essayisme dans toutes ses dimensions intimes, philosophiques, esthétiques, politiques, en régime médiatique et dans le contexte en mutation permanente des industries culturelles.

Content: Post-cinema designates a new way of making films. It is time to ask whether this novelty is complete or relative and to evaluate to what extent this novation represents a unitary current or multiple ways. The book proposes to integrate the post-cinema question within the post-art question in order to study the new way of making filmic images in new conditions more or less remote from the dispositif of the theater and in closer relationship with contemporary art. The issue will be considered at three levels: the impression of post-art on "regular" films ; the "relocation" (Cassetti) of the same films that can be seen using devices of all kinds, in conditions more or less remote from the dispositif of the theater ; parallel to the integration of contemporary art in "regular" cinema, the integration of cinema into contemporary art in all kinds of forms of creation and exhibition.

Content: Coincée entre la « télévision des maîtres d'école » et la télévision commerciale, la télévision des années 70 a bénéficié de peu d'intérêt de la part des chercheurs. Pourtant cette décennie est le théâtre de nombreuses transformations : la création d'une nouvelle chaîne, fondée sur l'idée de régionalisation, l'introduction de la publicité de marque, l'éclatement de l'ORTF. Si chacun de ces événements a parfois retenu l'intérêt des historiens, on s'est peu préoccupé de leurs incidences sur les programmes et la programmation. Ces nouvelles chaînes qui accèdent à leur autonomie sont traversées par deux forces antagoniques : l'une, qui relève encore de l'enthousiasme d'hommes de télévision cherchant à doter ce média de toutes ses possibilités expressives, à mettre la télévision en jeu par l'invention de toutes sortes de dispositifs d'émissions ; l'autre, qu'incarnent ceux qui ont compris que la logique économique de la concurrence imposait de penser les programmes dans une grille, et qui utiliseront les divertissements pour coller à la temporalité du spectateur. Cette relation au temps est peut-être la mutation la plus profonde qui s'accomplit alors devant les téléspectateurs des seventies : de la valorisation intemporelle du patrimoine, qui guidait la télévision des années 60, on passe à l'ère de l'information culturelle, bientôt à celle de la promotion. De plus en plus ancrée dans l'actualité, la télévision abandonne peu à peu tout ce qui pouvait encore appartenir à l'aléa de l'expérimentation pour se conformer à des formats internationaux dictés par les industries culturelles

Content: Since the very first days of cinema, audiences have marveled at the special effects imagery presented on movie screens. While long relegated to the margins of film studies, special effects have recently become the object of a burgeoning field of scholarship. With the emergence of a digital cinema, and the development of computerized visual effects, film theorists and historians have been reconsidering the traditional accounts of cinematic representation, recognising the important role of special effects. Understood as a constituent part of the cinema, special effects are a major technical but also aesthetic component of filmmaking and an important part of the experience for the audience. In this volume, new directions are charted for the exploration of this indispensable aspect of the cinematic experience. Each of the essays in this collection offers new insight into the theoretical and historical study of special effects.
