Grammatische Theorien dienen der Erfassung und Beschreibung von Regularitäten von Sprache. Die Geschichte der Grammatiktheorie betrachtet die seit der Antike immer komplexer werdenden Konzepte in ihrem diachronen Zusammenhang. Vorgestellt werden die wichtigsten Theorien von den frühesten (greifbaren) Anfängen - noch vor Dionysios Thrax, dem wir allerdings die erste brauchbare grammatische Systematik verdanken - bis hin zu Noam Chomskys hochökonomischem Minimalist Program am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der antiken Ars grammatica entstammen grosse Teile der bis heute verwendeten Terminologie. Das europäische Mittelalter entwickelt - im Anschluss an die spätantiken Grammatiker Donatus und Priscianus - die grammatischen Kategorien weiter. Im Spätmittelalter findet eine wichtige Neuausrichtung statt: die resolute Hinwendung zur Logik (Dialektik). Dies setzt sich nach der Epoche des Humanismus fort und drängt im 17. Jahrhundert den formalistischen Aspekt der Grammatik zurück. Nun stehen universale Aspekte im Vordergrund. Dem Zeitalter der Allgemeingrammatiken (18. Jahrhundert) folgt eine eher historisch geprägte Phase (19. Jahrhundert), die an Lautgesetzen interessiert ist. Mit dem Strukturalismus beginnt die linguistische Phase der Grammatik. Die wichtigsten Konzepte der modernen Grammatiktheorie werden in Einzelbetrachtungen vorgestellt, wobei das jeweilige Frageinteresse und der Ansatzpunkt im Vordergrund stehen: Strukturalistische Grammatik, Dependenz- und Valenzgrammatik, Funktionale Grammatik, Kategorialgrammatik, Montague-Grammatik, Generative Grammatiktheorie, Unifikationsgrammatiken, Optimalitätstheorie, Minimalistisches Programm. Das Buch richtet sich an (werdende) Philologen, Sprachwissenschaftler und andere Interessierte, ohne fachliches Vorwissen vorauszusetzen.
