Der außerordentlich reichhaltige, zum größeren Teil lateinisch, zum anderen deutsch geführte Gelehrtenbriefwechsel, der 506 Briefe aus der Zeit von 1614 bis 1656 von und an Joachim Jungius enthält, dokumentiert die wissenschaftliche Bedeutung von Jungius, gibt Einblick in damals diskutierte Fragen aus Philosophie und Theologie, Mathematik, Naturwissenschaften und Medizin und vermittelt damit auch ein anschauliches Bild des Privat-, Schul- und Hochschullebens vor allem in der Zeit und auf dem Hintergrund des Dreißigjährigen Krieges. Dr. Dr. Martin Rothkegel ist nach Promotion in Kirchengeschichte (Prag, 2001) und Klassischer Philologie (Hamburg, 2005) zur Zeit im Hamburger Schuldienst tätig.
