Von der Kohle soll hier die Rede sein. Sie speist Deutschlands Energiebedarf in weitestem Sinne. Sie wurde Grundlage einer neuen Rohstoffindustrie. Sie ist im gegenwärtigen Krieg überdies als Tauschmittel von größter Bedeutung. Mit seinen Kohlenschätzen vermag das deutsche Volk viele natürliche Mängel (Erdöl!) seines Lebensraumes zu gutem Teil auszugleichen. Die Verschiedenartigkeit der Formen, in die wir die in der Kohle ruhende Energie wie auch ihre Stofflichkeit zu wandeln vermögen, bringt in gleicher Weise die in diesem schlichten Naturstoff schlummernden Möglichkeiten wie die Schöpferkraft der deutschen Chemie zum Ausdruck. Diese Dinge sind staunenswert und stehen jedem eindringlich vor Augen. Mancher wird meinen, nichts anderes könne heute Hauptthema eines neuen Kohlenbuches sein. Dieses Bändchen ist aber mehr dem natürlichen Werden jenes wunderbaren Rohstoffs und seiner dem Außenstehenden ungeahnten Vielartigkeit gewidmet; auch eine solche Betrachtungsweise hat ihr gutes Recht: Denn was man aus der Kohle zu schaffen vermag, hatte die genaueste wissenschaftliche Erforschung ihrer Entstehung und Beschaffenheit zur Voraussetzung.
