Sie zeigen schon viel von Manns Erzählkunst und thematischen Vorlieben: den Gegensatz von Künstler und Bürger, die Lebensuntüchtigkeit der Hauptfiguren, ihre partielle Todesverfallenheit, körperliche Gebrechen wie Schwindsucht und Buckel als Ausdruck seelischer Nöte und ein unterdrücktes, unglückliches Sexualleben. Gerade in Hinsicht auf die Titelnovelle sprach Thomas Mann später von der 'Niederlage der Zivilisation, dem heulenden Triumph der unterdrückten Triebwelt' als einem Lebensthema, das ihn seither nicht mehr losgelassen habe. Siegfried Kaden (1945–2021), lebte und arbeitete über 20 Jahre in Kuba. Studium der Kunst und Kunstgeschichte in Wien und Stuttgart. Kadens Werk ist von einer großen Vielfalt geprägt. Die Literatur als Anreger, von der schöngeistigen über die Philosophie bis zur Soziologie, hat in seinem Werk deutliche Spuren hinterlassen. Es ist beinahe folgerichtig, dass er sich im Spätwerk auch mit Manns frühen Texten beschäftigt hat."-- Verlagsinformation

Seite [5]: "Thomas Manns Novellen (in der Fassung von 1898) [...] Dieses Buch wurde in Dresden von Thomas Walther (BBK) gestaltet und von der DZA Druckerei zu Altenburg gedruckt. Den Druck der Originallithographien vom Stein besorgte Thomas Franke, Leipzig. Die buchbinderische Herstellung übernahm ebenfalls DZA in Altenburg. Hergestellt wurde eine einmalige Auflage von 555 nummerierten Exemplaren. Der hochgeschätzte Künstler Siegfried Kaden verstarb im November 2021 in München, wenige Tage nachdem er die Lithosteine für den Druck freigegeben hatte. Den Ausgaben mit den Nummern 1 bis 100 liegt eine zusätzliche und leider nicht mehr vom Künstler signierte Originallithographie bei."
