Yanagi ist nicht leicht einzuordnen. Er hat über Blake und Whitman geschrieben und über die europäische Kunst von der Renaissance bis zum 20. Jahrhundert, dann aber auch die des eigenen Kulturkreises intensiv studiert und schließlich Volkskunst und Kunsthandwerk Japans in ihrer Bedeutung überhaupt erst entdeckt und mit der Gründung (unter anderen) des renommierten Japanischen Museums für Kunsthandwerk bekannt gemacht. Yanagi war aber auch ein Religionsphilosoph, er war in der christlichen Mystik bewandert, und er hat ganz intensiv verschiedene Schulen der speziell japanischen Ausprägung des Buddhismus wie Jodo Shinshu, Jishu und Zen (er war Schüler und Freund von Daisetsu Suzuki) studiert. Vor allem aus diesen Quellen speisen sich, in den meisten Essays dieser Sammlung, seine Ansichten zur Ästhetik der kunsthandwerklichen Gestaltung, Maßstäbe für einen neuen Standard handwerklicher Produktion gegen technisch-steriles Industrie-Design setzen möchten. So wird das Buch für den einen Leser stellenweise nur schwer zugänglich sein, für den anderen ganz neue Einblicke eröffnen. (3) (Jürgen Tacke)
