Die Renaissance war in vielerlei Hinsicht eine Epoche des Umbruchs: in Kultur und Kunst, in Politik, Wirtschaft und Religion. Ihren Ausgang nahm sie in Italien und so ist es wohl kein Zufall, dass die 7 ausgewählten Persönlichkeiten, deren Lebensläufe als renaissancetypisch vorgestellt werden, allesamt Italiener sind. Populärwissenschaftlich zusammengefasst, handelt es sich um Biografien von Menschen, denen man im Guten wie im Schlechten Größe zuerkennen muss. Allerdings ist zu fragen, warum der Autor (u.a. "Christentum kompakt", ID-B 32/10) keine einzige Frau in diese Anthologie aufgenommen hat, obgleich es gerade in jener Zeit fähige und berühmte Herrscherinnen gab sowie eine Reihe von weiblichen Gelehrten, Autorinnen und Malerinnen. Dass Geschichte nicht nur von Männern gemacht wird, sollte man eigentlich berücksichtigen. Davon abgesehen, ist das Buch eine erfreuliche Erscheinung: flüssig zu lesen, ausgewogen in seinen Urteilen und für jedes Lesepublikum ohne spezielle Vorbildung gut zu verstehen. Allen Bibliotheken gern empfohlen, auch für Schulen bestens geeignet.
