"Jeder will alt werden, aber niemand will alt sein" - besser kann man die Janusköpfigkeit des Alterns nicht beschreiben. Nie zuvor in der Geschichte der Menschheit war die Lebenserwartung der Menschheit so hoch wie heute. Der Anteil der Senioren nimmt in industrialisierten Gesellschaften immer mehr zu, bei drastisch gesunkener Geburtenrate. Die vertraute "Alterspyramide" ist auf den Kopf gestellt - mit enormen sozialen, ökonomischen und medizinischen Problemen. Der demografische Wandel beeinflusst längst die Praxis der Kulturellen Bildung: Aufgrund des relativ zur Lebenserwartung frühen Eintritts in den Ruhestand ergeben sich neue Freiräume, die sinnvoll auszufüllen sind. Musizieren, Malen, Theaterspielen und Tanzen sind nur einige Beispiele für die Beschäftigung mit Kunst und Kultur im Alter. Getanzt wird seit Menschengedenken, in allen Kulturen und über alle Zeiträume hinweg. Tanzen macht Spaß und vermittelt Lebensfreude, insbesondere durch den Einfluss der Musik mit ihrer rhythmischen Komponente; beim Tanzen ist der Körper mit allen Sinnen aktiv. Über die Funktion des tanzens im Gesellschaftsleben und damit für die im Alter so wichtige soziale Kommunikation hinaus ist es ein Mittel für alle Älteren, bis ins hohe Alter hinein frisch und leistungsfähig zu bleiben und dabei die Lebensqualität zu bewahren. Die positiven Auswirkungen von Tanz auf Körper und Geist und somit auf das Gehirn wurden in den letzten Jahren zunehmend Gegenstand der Forschung für Neurowissenschaften und Medizin. Das kulturelle Erbe Tanzen und seine Heilkraft - ein einzigartiges Forschungsgebiet!
