Die französische Historiographie des von Revolutionen geprägten 20. Jahrhunderts vermag in besonderer Weise neue Perspektiven auf das Revolutionsbild in Büchners Geschichtsdrama zu eröffnen. Die Diskussion über «Dantons Tod» in der Büchnerforschung wiederum spiegelt vielfach Prägungen der Interpreten durch bestimmte geschichtswissenschaftliche Revolutionsdeutungen. Diese Arbeit löst sich auf der Grundlage von Hayden Whites «Poetik der Geschichte» von der Suche nach Büchners Position(en) im Stück. Sie richtet den Fokus auf die im Text implizit wirksamen narrativen Strukturen und formalen Erklärungsmuster. Dabei versteht sich die tropologische und strukturanalytische Untersuchung als ein Beitrag zu einer gattungsübergreifenden Poetologie der Revolutionsgeschichte in der Moderne.
