Der Schriftsteller und Maler Peter Weiss (1916-1982) ist ein "Unzugehöriger": Als Sohn eines Ungarn jüdischer Abstammung mit tschechoslowakischem Pass und einer Schweizerin zieht er früh von Nowawes nach Bremen und zurück nach Berlin... Als Sohn eines Ungarn jüdischer Abstammung mit tschechoslowakischem Pass und einer Schweizerin zieht er früh von Nowawes nach Bremen und zurück nach Berlin, ist "der Ausländer" in seiner Klasse, emigriert mit den Eltern über England und Böhmen nach Schweden, ohne Halt in dem, was andere ihre "Heimat" oder "Vaterland" nennen. Peter Weiss sucht Halt und Identität in der Kunst. Weiss malt apokalyptische Bilder, wird Schriftsteller. Beeinflusst von Hesse und Kafka, inspiriert von Psychoanalyse und Surrealismus. In den 60er Jahren gerät Weiss in den Strudel einer sich politisierenden Welt und begreift nun seine Kunst als Sprachorgan der gleich ihm nach Selbstbestimmung Verlangenden. Plötzlich ist er ein Mann der Öffentlichkeit, hofiert im Osten, angefeindet im Westen. Mit seiner "Ästhetik des Widerstands" kehrt er noch einmal an seine Anfänge zurück: Wachsein und Traum, Geschichte und individuelles Empfinden, Realismus und Vision in ungeheuren Sprachblöcken verdichtend, getragen von Liebe und Hoffnung. Ullrich Kasten zeichnet ein einfühlsames Porträt des 1982 im schwedischen Exil gestorbenen großen Autoren deutscher Sprache.
