Es gibt im Film des Argentiniers Adolfo Aristarain eine mehrfach wiederkehrende Szene, in der ein Mann und ein Knabe mit einer Pferdekutsche gegen die Eisenbahn um die Wette fahren... Die Vergangenheit, genauer: Die Tage der Jugend im argentinischen Bergdorf San Luis, stehen im Mittelpunkt von "En un lugar en el mundo". Ernesto (Gaston Batyi), ein Städter, der mit seiner Mutter in Buenos Aires lebt, kehrt in jenes Dorf zurück, in dem er aufgewachsen war, wo ein Grossgrundbesitzer herrschte und die Suche nach Erdöl einen anderen Menschenschlag in den verlassenen Flecken verschlug. Adolfo Aristarain ...versucht, in diese Vergangenheit vorzudringen. Es sind die Orte, die in seinem Film das Gewesene evozieren, die die Bilder wieder auftauchen lassen und in den Bildern die Menschen. So lange ist gar nicht her, seit Ernesto mit dem spanischen Geologen Hans das Wettrennen (mit der Pferdekutsche) veranstaltet hatte. Hans, ein abgeklärt wirkender ehemaliger Politakitivist, und Ernestos Vater Mario waren gegensätzliche Naturen: Der letztere ein Idealist, der sich für die Cooperative einsetzte und für die Rechte der Bauern. Der erstere, ein Ironiker, der über den Idealismus nur ein Staunen übrig hat. "Wenn wir den Krieg nicht gewisnnen können", meint Ernestos Vater einmal, "so können wir zumindest eine Schlacht gewinnen." Walter Ruggle (Trigon-Film)
