Ein dichtbesiedeltes Stadtgebiet im Norden Treptows, direkt an der Grenze zu Neukölln gelegen, wird stellvertretend für die allgemeine Situation im Umfeld der Berliner Mauer betrachtet. Die Mauer teilte hier nicht nur Ost und West, sondern teilweise sogar die Häuserblocks einzelner Straßenzüge. Mit dem Ende der Teilung der Stadt hat sich das Lebensumfeld entlang des ehemaligen Grenzverlaufs grundlegend verändert. Doch haben sich auch nachbarschaftliche Beziehungen über den ehemaligen Todesstreifen hinweg erhalten, oder reichten die vergangenen zehn Jahre nicht aus, die städtische Leere zu überbrücken, die er hinterließ? Zwanzig Studierende der Europäischen Ethnologie erkundeten die nachbarschaftlichen Verhältnisse der Anwohner vor und nach dem Mauerbau. Wie ist die Erinnerung daran? Gibt es Freundschaft, Distanz oder Ignoranz? Was bedeuten individuelle Erfahrungen im Zusammenhang mit öffentlichen Einrichtungen wie Kneipe, Kirche oder Betrieb? Die anhand von Interviews, Reportagen, Archivrecherchen u. a. gewonnenen Einblicke sind in diesem Band wiederzufinden.
