Das Buch behandelt Aufstellung und Einsatz dieser beiden deutschen Divisionen im April 1945 und schließt damit eine Lücke in der kriegsgeschichtlichen Literatur. Die Panzerdivision Clausewitz wurde im Raum Lauenburg/E -Uelzen aufgestellt und dort in heftige Kämpfe mit den vordringenden Engländern verwickelt. Sie versuchte anschließend, auftragsgemäß die Verbindung zur 11 Armee im Harz herzustellen. Dieser Versuch, der durch die Nachschublinien der bereits an der Elbe stehenden US-Truppen führte, mißlang. Trotz einzelner Erfolge wurden die zersplitterten Kräfte der Panzerdivision zerschlagen und gerieten in Gefangenschaft. Die Infanteriedivision Schill entstand durch Zusammenfassung der "Kampfgruppe Burg" unter Führung von Oberstleutnant Müller und von Restteilen versprengter Truppen, vorwiegend im Raum ostwärts der Elbe. Mit zwei Grenadierregimentern und einer Sturmgeschützabteilung konnte sie den vordringenden russischen Kräften im Raum südlich der Autobahn Magdeburg - Potsdam und später im Raum Brandenburg - ernsthaften Widerstand leisten. Ein großer Teil der in US-Gefangenschaft geratenen Soldaten dieser Division wurde später an die Sowjets ostwärts der Elbe ausgeliefert. Beide Divisionen gehörten zur 12 Armee des Generals Wenck, die Berlin befreien sollte. (AUT)
