In der Informationsgesellschaft bilden Massenmedien und verschiedene Kanäle der Massenkommunikation zusammen das wichtigste Öffentlichkeitsforum. Die zunehmende Digitalisierung der Gesellschaft bedeutet neue Strukturen und Formen der Interaktion, neue Möglichkeiten für mehr Teilhabe, neue Chancen für kritische Gegenöffentlichkeit und Alternativbewegung(en). Die vorliegende Publikation untersucht die heutige Medienlandschaft in Russland, die von einer monopolartigen Kontrolle der klassischen Medien durch den Staat geprägt ist. Diese Medien gehen sukzessive in den Besitz regierungsfreundlicher Unternehmen über und sind einer rigiden Gesetzgebung ausgesetzt, die sich zudem rapide ändert. Die Untersuchung versucht die Fragen zu beantworten, wie das wachsende Misstrauen gegenüber den staatlichen Strukturen und den traditionellen Medien sowie der Mangel an sozialer Kommunikation offline die Entwicklung von Online-Angeboten und ihre inhaltliche Agenda im Lande prägen, wie neue Medien und das Social Web die öffentliche Meinung in Russland beeinflussen, wie sie von Vertretern der Zivilgesellschaft und unabhängigen sozialpolitischen Akteuren genutzt werden, welche Möglichkeiten neue Technologien für sie bieten und welche Perspektiven dadurch eröffnet werden
