Brandenburg wird schon lange als »Streusandbüchse des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation« bespottet. Damit verbindet sich sein Image als ein »karges Land mit sprödem Charme«. Gleichzeitig aber zeugen ausgedehnte Schutzgebiete von der reichhaltigen natürlichen Ausstattung der Landschaften. In der Realität bieten die brandenburgischen Landschaften weit mehr an Schönheit, Eigenheit, Produktivität, Ursprünglichkeit und Verschiedenartigkeit als mancher Touristenführer mit »klaren Seen, herrlichen Wäldern und weiten, offenen Blicken über Felder“ beschreiben und versprechen. Die Lychen-Templiner Wald- und Seenlandschaft ist ein traditionsreiches Gebiet für Erholungsuchende. Aber warum ist das Gebiet so waldreich? Warum wird es wie keine andere Landschaft von langen Rinnen durchzogen, in denen sich fast flussartige Seen gebildet haben. Warum ist diese Landschaft ein Hotspot der Libellenfauna in Deutschland? Warum hat sich hier auf sehr trockenen Standorten – in der Kleinen Schorfheide – dennoch eine überraschend vielfältige Waldvegetation entwickelt?
