Content: Korean documentaries have garnered greater attention in recent years with the success of films like Our School and Old Partner, but it's not possible to talk about Korean documentaries without mentioning Kim Dong Won. The pioneering filmmaker's 1988 film Sang-kye-dong Olympics is often cited as the beginning of Korea's indie documentary movement, and his 2003 film Repatriation remains one of Korea's most watched and most acclaimed documentaries. Though not that well known outside film circles, Kim Dong Won's legacy of socially conscious filmmaking about local events and issues has made him one of Korea's most influential and respected directors. The films of Kim Dong Won were recently covered in a retrospective at the 11th Jeonju International Film Festival, and now they're finally making it to home video for the first time. The four-disc Kim Dong Won Collection boxset contains 14 short films and features, around 90 minutes of extras, and a booklet. (Yesasia)

Content: "This book provides real stories of the South Korean semiconductor community. It explores the lives and careers of six influential semiconductor engineers who all studied at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) under the mentorship of Dr. Kim Choong-Ki, the most influential semiconductor professor in South Korea during the last quarter of the twentieth century. Kim's students became known as "Kim's Mafia" because of the important positions they went on to hold in industry, government, and academia. This book will be of interest to semiconductor engineers and electronics engineers, historians of science and technology, and scholars and students of East Asian studies. "They were called 'Kim's Mafia.' Kim Choong-Ki himself wouldn't have put it that way. But it was true what semiconductor engineers in South Korea whispered about his former students: They were everywhere. ... Kim was the first professor in South Korea to systematically teach semiconductor engineering. From 1975, when the nation had barely begun producing its first transistors, to 2008, when he retired from teaching, Kim trained more than 100 students, effectively creating the first two generations of South Korean semiconductor experts." (Source: IEEE Spectrum, October, 2022.)"--

Content: Hailed as a landmark documentary, "Repatriation" chronicles the lives of "unconverted" North Korean spies who were captured and imprisoned in South Korea for more than 30 years. The filmmaker Kim Dong Won developed a close relationship with them after they moved to his neighborhood after their release from prison. This friendship eventually led him to a film project, which spanned 12 years and 800 hours of videotaping. The film documents their views on Korea's partition, their daily hardships as they attempt to adjust to South Korean society as well as their struggle for repatriation. Through this intimate portrayal, Kim offers a penetrating insight into the tragic consequences of the Cold War that still persist in Korea. The film received the Freedom of Expression Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2004. [asiasociety.org]

Content: One Man (2001): Interviews with Father Roberto Seo's brother, students, colleagues and others, provide an insight into his life.

Content: The 6 Days Struggle at the Myong Dong Cathedral (1997): What started off as a student rally on June 10, 1987, soon became a widespread call for democracy by the people of South Korea.
