Das Verhältnis des Kirchenhistorikers und Wissenschaftsorganisators Adolf von Harnack (1851-1930) zum Judentum ist auffällig uneindeutig. So verurteilte er zwar die antisemitischen Ausfälle des Hofpredigers Adolf Stoecker in unmissverständlichem Ton; er wollte aber ebenso das Alte Testament aus dem christlichen Kanon entfernen, er zeichnete das antike Judentum in düsteren Farben und er unterhielt über ein Vierteljahrhundert hinweg einen Briefwechsel mit dem Publizisten und Rassetheoretiker Houston Stewart Chamberlain (1855-1927). Um dieses widersprüchlich scheinende Verhalten besser zu verstehen, untersucht Wolfram Kinzig drei Themenkomplexe im Werk Harnacks: die Entstehung und Eigenart seines Bildes des frühchristlichen Häretikers Marcion, sein Verständnis des Alten Testamentes und seine Sicht des antiken wie des zeitgenössischen Judentums. Darüber hinaus wird der Briefwechsel zwischen Harnack und Chamberlain erstmals vollständig publiziert und kommentiert. Das Buch ist grundlegend für ein besseres Verständnis der komplexen Beziehungen von Kulturprotestantismus und Judentum
