- Main description: It was not until late that the comedies of Aristophanes were translated into German. What impeded their reception were the abundance of unclear allusions to day-to-day politics in Athens and obscene jokes. Thus, the translation of Johann Gustav Droysen from 1835/38 was one of the very first German editions of the complete works of Aristophanes. This study aims to investigate Droysen's position in its relation to the classical tradition of translation. On the other hand it tries to elucidate Droysen's relationship to other authors of the prerevolutionary (Vormärz) era and their reception of Aristophanes - at that time they rediscovered the political potential of the comedies
