Wenige technische Probleme haben in den letzten Jahren das Interesse weiter Kreise in so hohem Maße erregt wie das der möglichst vollkommenen und restlosen Ausnutzung der Kohle. Lange Zeit hindurch haben sich die Anstrengungen der Ingenieure auf die Verbesserung der Energieumwandlung (Verbesserung der thermischen Wirkungsgrades der Wärmekraftmaschine, Erhöhung des Kesselwirkungsgrades, Verminderung der Fortleitungsverluste usw.) beschränkt, erst in den letzten Jahren ist man zum planmäßigen Abbau der Kohle und zu ihrer Aufschließung durch die sogenannte Nebenproduktenwirtschaft geschritten. Die chemische Auswertung der Kohle wurde durch den Abschluß Deutschlands vom Weltmarkt stark gefördert, zumal das Interesse solcher Kreise erweckt wurde, die ihr früher fremd und teilnahmlos gegenüberstanden. Es ist daher an sich erklärlich, daß überschwengliche Hoffnungen und Erwartungen an diesen jungen Zweig der Technik geknüpft wurden und daß vornehmlich Nichttechniker die vollkommene und baldige Umgestaltung der Kohlenverwertung gebieterisch verlangten. Wie so häufig bei wichtigen technischen Neuerungen übersah man, daß die Ausbeute eines wertvollen Stoffes nicht allein durch die technische Mögliehkeit seiner Gewinnung begrenzt ist. Hierüber entscheidet vielmehr letzten Endes die Wirtschaftlichkeit des Verfahrens. Die durch den Krieg geschaffene Lage mag zeitweilig eine Verschiebung mit sich bringen, wird aber der Weltmarkt wieder frei und muß mit dem Wettbewerb ähnlicher billigerer Auslanderzeugnisse gerechnet werden, so stellt sich das Gleichgewicht wieder ein, wenn nicht durch Zölle der teuern Inlandware die Spannung an Mehrkosten gegenüber der ausländischen gutgebracht werden kann
